Extend A Hand

When I moved to Napa I did not know anyone. A series of circumstances led me to an invitation to join a group of local women who met once a month at each others homes or out at local restaurants. I was very flattered and excited.

This was a group of very successful and interesting women . My flattery & excitement were short lived. As I began to reach out to these women on a one on one basis, to get to know them better they questioned my objective. Basically they thought I was trying to use their network or connections or even stranger that I was looking for a job,  when all I was looking for was a colleague or friend. Would no one extend her hand to me?

We now have a woman on the presidential campaign trail and the  commentary is about her hormones, menopause (Time Magazine) and with nicknames like “Ovary”! A woman gave Hillary the nick name “Ovary”. She does not like Hillary. The woman’s rationale is that people come up with nicknames for politicians all the time: former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was dubbed The “Governator “and ex-President Bill Clinton was known as “Slick Willie”. Seriously?

Women earned the right to vote in 1920 and here we are 95 years later in the 21st century and women are still struggling to be relative, respected, competitive, independent, with equal in pay and roles etc. How have so many years passed with so much progress on the one hand and so little progress on the other.

Over the years we have talked and talked ad nauseam about women’s equality but we women must be the doers not the whiners. We can blame others but the most blame lies right before us if we look in the mirror.

It’s way beyond time for every woman to stand up for every other woman. You don’t have to like the woman to make sure she gets respect and equal pay etc. She can even be a BITCH!

We are never too old, too fat, too thin, too busy, too young, too anything, to extend a hand to another woman. Will you join me in this journey to extend a hand to every woman out there so we can begin to progress to the day where no woman is publicaly nicknamed Ovary whether you like her or not!
